Scenario: You recently saw your naturopathic doctor and she told you to begin taking supplements to provide additional support. She recommends a specific brand but when you get to the store you see 20 different brands of the same supplement and huge price differences. What do you do? Why not just buy the cheapest brand?
Q: Is the product standardized? right now the U.S supplement is like the wild west! Pretty much anyone can create a supplement and begin selling it to the public with little regulations.
A: Look for companies that undergo rigorous quality standards from both internal guidelines and external sources. Some of my favorite brands of clinical grade supplements include Thorne, Gaia Herbs, NeuroScience, Wise Woman, Nordic Naturals, and Integrative Therapeutics.
Q: Is there a difference between buying a product that uses the whole plant rather than the root or leaf?
A: Simply put yes! always ask yourself these questions before buying a product:
What part of the plant has been used (if it is a herb?), whole plant, leaf, root,...
Is it organic?
Was is sustainably harvested?
Where was the product made?
